Precautions to Take Before the Winter Break
Before you leave for the Winter Break please address the following precautions from DPS Facility Management:
Holiday Reminder for Principals(Of Interest to All Principals)
As you are thinking about the upcoming holiday break, please be thinking about leaving your building protected for hard freezes. Your Facility Manager has been instructed on what to do but they need your help. Many schools have plumbing on exterior walls. These sinks and water lines are almost always contained in built in cabinets. During the holiday break, the cabinet doors must be left open to get the full warmth of the room circulating around the pipes and fittings. Please assist us in preventing water line freezing and make sure that all such cabinet doors are left open. This same request is made for any freeze alert that is sent from the Service Center to the schools and departments.
All appliances, computers and printers should be turned off and unplugged. Laptops should be secured and out of sight. All space heaters must be unplugged.

REMINDER - HOLIDAY LUNCHEON
Our annual holiday luncheon has been scheduled for Thursday, December 17 from 11:30-1.
While purse strings are tight all over, we felt it was important to carry on with our tradition of gathering together for the holidays. We hope that you will plan to join us for the festivities. As usual, Chef Tim and Chef Kristi and their students will prepare our feast.
Due to the budget, we will not be able to distribute turkeys this year. We will have a white elephant raffle and give away door prizes, including Michael’s floral arrangements.
Please consider bringing a non-perishable item to donate to the food banks in Denver who are low on supplies.
Thank you,
Marla Rodriguez,

Scholarships Awarded
The Denver Area Health Care Recruiter Association (DAHCRA) met just prior to the holiday to determine where we would like our annual scholarships to go. After careful review of all eligible health care programs, we decided that we would like to award to Emily Griffith Opportunity School two $500 scholarships; one for a home health aide student and one for a CNA student. We felt that this assistance could help to jumpstart two careers in nursing.
We do have some stipulations. The student must:
Be a citizen of the United States.
Maintain a B-average in all courses.
Have an interest in pursuing Nursing as a career.

School Closed Veterans' Day
There seems to be some confusion as to when Emily Griffith will be closed for Veterans' Day. Some of you may have a calendar that shows Friday, November 13 as the school being closed for Veterans' Day.
Our school will be closed in observance of Veterans' Day on Wednesday, November 11. Please let your students know that there is no school on Wednesday, November 11. Our school will be in session on Friday, November 13.

Recycle Trash Bin
It has been reported that there is non recyclable trash in the recyclable trash bin. Please remember that the trash bin outside of HVAC/Welding is only for recyclable trash. It would be a shame to have them discontinue such a valuable service. Please walk a few more feet down the alley to empty your trash in the proper trash bin.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

Fire Inspection
A couple weeks ago the fire inspector walked through EGOS and provided recommendations for fire safety compliance.
Department Deans/Director and facilities have been given a list of the infractions and will share that information with you.
Some items that you can take care of right away, are the following.
·Please do not plug extension cords and surge protectors into each other (daisy chain) and then into the wall outlet. In some cases, solutions are easy, and we simply needed to unplug a surge protector and go directly into the wall!
·Please remove all items from classroom doors
·If you’d like to post items near a door, please do so at least 18” from the door.
·Walls may have 50% or less student work (or information) attached to them
·**This is new. We are not supposed to have any cloths or plastic table cloths covering anything in the classrooms unless they have a “fire retardant” label sewn on to the fabric.
There may be a few other unique things to take care of, please speak with your dean/director.
Thanks for helping us take care of these items. The fire inspector will be back around November 15.

Refugee Story
As fate would have it, Hodan is currently a student at EGOS, studying English in the CRESL program. Her story is compelling and it highlights the tragedy--and optimism--of so many displaced people.
When you consider that UNHCR deals with millions of refugees each year, it it somewhat amazing that one they chose to focus on is right here at our school!

"In Praise of Teachers”
Please read the following and know that you make a difference, your work matters, and you follow a long legacy of powerful teachers at Emily Griffith. Thank you! Please read the following.
“My grandfather's teacher at the 24th Street Elementary School in Denver was Emily Griffith, founder of the Emily Griffith Opportunity School. After being beat up and called a dirty Jew, my grandfather decided to drop out of school in eighth grade. Emily Griffith came to his house, brought him a pail of ice cream, and convinced him to stay in school. My grandfather believed that Emily Griffith's visit that day saved his life.”

Trash Pickup and Recycle Items
The city of Denver as of 15 September started collecting our trash. The school district is still in negotiations over the collection of recycle items.
What you need to know regarding recycle pick up that will help the custodial staff:
* Please do not place recycled items around the dumpster on the ground if the
dumpster is full.
* Please do not place recyclable items on the dumpster lid if they are full.
* If the recycle collection dumpster is full you must throw trash in the normal
trash bin.
* The recycle companies refuse to collect, if recycle items exceed the dumpsters
load capacity.
* When recycle items are not properly placed within the bins, the custodial staff
has to take extra time to clean up everything left on the ground or on the
dumpster lids.
* Items that are not contained within the dumpster are also considered a fire
hazard by the Denver Fire Department.
Thank you for your assistance

Support the Rockies
Mayor John Hickenlooper and Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg today encouraged Colorado Rockies fans throughout the Denver area and in classrooms large and small to wear purple on Friday in advance of the team's first home playoff game this weekend. "The Colorado Rockies will return to Coors Field on Saturday to continue their march toward a second World Series appearance in three years," said Hickenlooper, a former high school junk ball pitcher and lifelong baseball enthusiast. "We are cheering hard for the home team and look forward to watching the Rockies go deep into the playoffs." Boasberg encouraged students and teachers throughout Denver Public Schools to show support for the Rockies by wearing purple to school on Friday. "This is a really exciting time for our city and for our kids," Boasberg said. "And I'm sure we'll see tremendous Rockies' spirit at our schools on Friday."
Also today, team flags for the Colorado Rockies were hoisted onto flag poles at the City and County Building and the Webb Municipal Building. The flags will fly as long as the Rockies are in the playoffs. And the lights on the City and County Building will turn purple tonight - and on all game days - during the team's playoff run.

Professional Development Day
October 16, 2009
Professional Development Day will be October 16, 2009. The day's activities will begin at 8 am with a Continental Breakfast served in the Student Lounge. At 8:30 am, the day's activities will be introduced with a short video from the Technology in Education (TIE) Conference that several colleagues had the opportunity to attend last summer. In addition, you will be introduced to the online technology training to be offered by the Denver Public Schools. Between 9-11 am, you will be able to select four out of ten breakout sessions to attend. These sessions will serve as an overview of the new technology that is available to educators. After attending these 'teaser' sessions, you will have the chance to sign up for future technology workshops to be offered through the Instructional Academy. The afternoon will be determined by the deans of each college.
Technology in Education Colorado, INC. (TIE) is a Colorado-based organization founded in 1986 by a group of teachers with a vision to host a conference focusing on the increasing role technology plays in education.
Today, TIE organizes a premier statewide conference helping teachers integrate technology tools and 21st century skills including technology and information literacy standards into all content areas. The four-day, hands-on technology focused conference that models and promotes the use of technology integration in the classroom will be held at the Convention Center next summer. The colleagues who attended last summer urge you to consider attending next year.

Repair of Boilers
Beginning next week, October 5, the boilers will be shut down due to repairs of steam traps. It will take approximately three weeks to complete the repairs.
During this time, please dress accordingly in layers. Work will be done as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Heating Our Old Facility
Heating our old facility
Overview
We’re not going to start out with four letter words, however, as temperatures begin to drop and our heaters kick in at home, at some point we have to take off our rose colored glasses and get ready for the c—d and s—w!
Victor and crew are having the same thoughts about keeping us warm this fall and winter.
• It takes a week for the boilers to get hot enough to create steam to warm the building
• It takes a week for the boilers to cool down
• Once the boilers are up and running they are NOT turned off!
• Temperatures in Colorado can range from 30 degrees in the morning to 90 in the afternoon. So…Keep these things in mind:
o As the day warm, WE STILL HAVE RESIDUAL HEAT from the boilers!
o Dress in layers! Encourage your students to do the same
o Bring hats and mittens to class for the mornings
o Run fans in the afternoon.
Current work on heating system
We have a unique situation this year regarding when Victor turns on the boilers and it has a name, “Fixing the steam traps”
What does this have to do with you? Comfort!
The aged pipes that carry the hot water throughout the building have sprung leaks…32 of them in fact! As a critical maintenance issue, the district is repairing these cracks. We planned for this work to be completed in the summer, however, all bonds from the last election had not yet been purchased; money was not available until this time. THIS MEANS VICTOR CANNOT TURN ON THE BOILERS UNTIL THE PROJECT IS COMPLETED. The estimated time of completion is mid-November.
Important information
• Plugging in space heaters will over load the system and blow electrical circuits. Please do not use space heaters in any space or room.
o We realize this may be less than ideal, please honor this request
• Space heaters that you may see throughout the building have been approved.
Thanks for understanding the situation and realizing that some things are out of our control.

[CMR] : A reminder about parking information.
(CMR]
As we continue to work with DPW parking I wanted to make my remarks at our back to school meeting available to you on the staff update page of our intranet. So here are some things to remember about parking.
1. DPW Parking was hired to help us. Luke Lee is our direct contact, he told me to mention that he doesn’t bite! (Really he’s a great guy!)
2. All vehicles must have hang tags or secondary permits VISIBLE through the windshield. If you find yourself driving your secondary vehicle more than your primary vehicle, please switch your hang tag to the car you are driving the most. The hang tag is much easier for DPW to identify when monitoring the lot and helps them be more efficient.
3. If you are driving a motorcycle, please park it in one of the corner areas, do not park it in a regular stall. Preferably in the Southwest corner near the elevators, or in one of the other open corners of the 5th Floor. We anticipate the lot being full every day and need stalls available for vehicles.
4. We have requested trash receptacles to be placed on the 5th and other floors. We have to go through the HOA to get this done, so it is a slow process. Please be patient. We know that some of you have seen trash in the stairwells. Again, we sent the request to the HOA to have the security/maintenance manager have this cleaned daily and trash receptacles placed on all levels. This probably goes back to the lack of trash receptacles.
5. The cameras and emergency call boxes ARE NOT ACTIVE. We have brought it to the attention of the HOA and it is under discussion. In the mean time, they should not be relied on for emergency assistance. If you are parking during irregular hours when there is little or no daylight, please get someone to walk with you. For your safety, never be alone.
6. Do not leave anything of value in your vehicle. Cell phones, Ipods, cameras, wallets, purses, laptops, money, GPS devices, keys, etc. Do not leave these items in your vehicle if you do not want them stolen. We do not anticipate vehicles being broken into, but do not want to give anyone a reason to break into any of your vehicles.
7. If you see a problem such as one or more of the elevators not functioning, please bring it to our attention so that we can inform the HOA that they need to send an elevator technician to fix it ASAP.
8. Transponders will not be given out until sometime next year when the gate arms are installed. We will let you know as this time approaches.
If you have any parking concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Changes
As the new school year approaches, I wanted to keep you informed about a few changes we have made. I have asked Sharron Carosella to take on one of the most critical components of our school this year. Sharron has agreed to create and implement a comprehensive curriculum in career development and job placement. In this uncertain economic climate, we can predict that job placement will change and could become more difficult as the economy continues to recover. We need to be prepared for this circumstance and there is no one better to ensure our continued success in job placement than Sharron.
I have asked Marla Rodriguez to assume the responsibility of managing all of the student services areas effective September 3. Again, in the uncertain economic times, it is critical that we continue to emphasis student recruitment and enrollment. I have asked Marla to oversee all areas that involve students so that all our efforts are aligned to realize optimal enrollment.
Sharron and Marla will be working together in the next month to ensure that we can transition smoothly into the new staff alignment I have outlined. I am confident that these changes will help us thrive in this economy. Please do your part to make this a smooth transition.
In addition, I have asked Connie Ross to manage all facilities requests and repairs effective September 3. Staff should continue to use the staff intranet for custodial and facilities requests. Connie will oversee the operation with our facilities manager.

Please watch for the photographers (they set up in room 238), and at a time convenient to you, allow us to snap a shot.
Thanks so much.

Donation to EGOS from Grainger
Donation will provide 50 $1000 scholarships
DENVER, CO – Emily Griffith Opportunity School has partnered with Grainer, Inc., to advance technical education programs, it was announced today. A $50,000 donation from Graniger, Inc., a leading broad line supplier of facilities maintenance products, will provide 50 scholarships worth $1,000 each.
With retiring baby boomers widening the gap between the supply of skilled workers and the growing technical demands of today's workplace, industry experts predict major skilled labor shortages across North America in areas such as manufacturing, HVAC and welding, over the next 10 years. Based on the recommendation of Denver area branch managers, Randall Kopp, Joel Hicks, and Robert Rogers, The Grainger Foundation has stepped up to address this need by awarding $50,000 to advance Emily Griffith Opportunity School technical education programs.
Students at Emily Griffith Opportunity School, Denver’s Technical College, will be eligible for $1,000 scholarships when they enroll in one of the programs in the College of Trades and Industry – Aircraft Maintenance, Automotive Technician, Automotive Collision, Custodial Training, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Welding. Scholarships will be awarded on a need-basis.
“Grainger is proud to partner with Emily Griffith Opportunity School because the school provides a great service in the much needed area of technical education.” said Randall Kopp, Branch Manager at Grainger. “We are excited about helping hard-working students turn into professionals.”
“We are so appreciative of the generosity of Grainger, especially in these economic times,” said Marilyn Bowlds, Executive Director of the Emily Griffith Foundation. “This donation will have a direct impact on our ability to help students attend our college and get started in high paying careers.”
Emily Griffith Opportunity School
With a current enrollment of approximately 10,000 students, Emily Griffith Opportunity School is a public post-secondary institution dedicated to responding to the educational needs of the community. Founded in 1916 in order to provide opportunities “for all who wish to learn," the school has assisted over 1.5 million students in attaining the skills necessary for initial employment, career advancement, and further education.

From the Foundation
A good time was had by all at Ladies’ Luncheon fundraiser at Cableland last week. Thanks to the many staff members who supported the event. We have a few real bargains remaining from our silent auction. They are great bargains, because the beginning bids are half or less of the value. For example, one staff member got two round-trip airline tickets to Hawaii for $400! If you’re interested in any of the following, stop by the foundation office, Room 200, or call Marilyn at 34722:
Three-month membership at the Denver Athletic Club
Six-month valet parking pass at Cherry Creek Shopping Center
Self-guided jeep tour from Frisco
Lodge Casino Dining-Dinner at the White Buffalo Grille
Fitzgeralds Casino-Dinner for Four
Preparation of a Living Will and Power of Attorney
Twelve, beautiful, Franklin Collector Plates
We also permitted four men to attend this year. Why? They were managers from W.W. Grainger and presented us with a $50,000 check for fifty $1000 scholarships for TT&I!

EGOS Server Down
The Operating system is down. After much research and troubleshooting (in between all my other calls) it looks like I will have to reinstall the server operating system.
I want to do this very carefully so to make sure no data will be lost.
The server is 12 years old which is limiting to my options. The server operating system is the NT4 which is also old which adds to my caution.
I thank you for your patience and I hope to have everything up in the near future.

Minutes From SFCC Meeting
Minutes from the May 8, 2009 Meeting
Lowry, Building 959, President’s Conference Room
I. Bulletin Board:
AEC 101, 102, 121, 123, 131—credit hour reductions, yes
CAD 215—No, no discipline chair approval, too much duplication from another course, most of the discipline voted against it. A question was asked: What can the faculty member who wants this change do? The answer: take it up at the 2-2 conference with the discipline.
CAR courses and CON courses—recommend that the discipline meet at the 2-2 (or during the summer) and work on duplication and deletion matters. Darrell will help coordinate and facilitate this.
CTC 108 and 121—table, have they been posted for 30 days? Question for Geri: Can a Dean be a Discipline Chari?
EIC 125—table, need TSJC input
ENY courses—table, possible duplication and overlap issues. The group is meeting on Monday. Make them an item for the Aug. meeting.
FIN 243—yes
FLD 210—yes
--moved on to some other matters and then returned to the Bulletin Board—
HIT courses—Ginny explained the accrediting agency requirements for this discipline that they are seeking to meet. She also said there is not much time left to get this done and that it is a costly process. Joan read an e-mail from her HIT person who did not want these changes. Possible numbering and duplication issues were raised. It seems there are two different accrediting agencies—one for a certificate and one for a degree. Lengthy debate ensued. There were different interpretations of the results of a meeting that was held by the discipline on this matter. Ginny was surprised to hear the objections. There was also lack of agreement on who the discipline chair is for HIT. There was a motion made and seconded to have the groups meet at the 2-2 conference and work out these issues. The motion passed unanimously.
FST courses—yes
GUS courses—table, need TSJC input
JOU 102, title change—yes
MGD 220 and 252—yes
PHY 107—yes
PLU 242—yes
ARC courses—deletions, still needs the 30 days, item for Aug. meeting
PHO courses—continue to table until the Aug. meeting. They have been discussed at the March and April meeting. SFCC wants Geri’s input.
PER 264—yes, had been approved in the Ap. Meeting.
II. Peter Beal explained and defended his request to create a HNR (honors) prefix. Many of the SFCC members explained how their college is already doing the interdisciplinary honors concept that Peter suggested, through other means. Some members brought up the question of possible transfer issues if that prefix was used. The motion to approve this prefix was defeated. Peter will take the SFCC comments back to his campus.
III. Linda Bowman gave CCCS/CCHE updates (Geri’s son was graduating from CU-Boulder that morning):
1. Sen. King’s transfer bill was not passed by the General Assembly. Most four-year colleges and the Department of Higher Ed fought against the bill. It was a close vote in the senate—16-18. There were 15 lobbyists from the four-years working against the bill. Geri, Linda, and others were very hard in support of the bill.
2. The concurrent enrollment bills passed. Ninth and tenth graders can participate. Quality standards were stressed. These bills were supported by the P-20 Council.
3. The Amendment 50 enacting legislation passed.
4. The merger of PCC and San Juan Basin passed.
5. SB212 meetings are still ongoing. It is important that community college faculty continue to involve themselves in this process.
6. There will be a math summit this summer. Geri will get the word out.
7. Don’t contact GT members [?] on your own. There is a system in place that should be followed.
IV. Scott handed out a copy of “Rules of Engagement for gtPathways Reviews” from Vicki Leal at CDHE. He will send it electronically to SFCC members.
V. Debra Nickell gave the group some handouts explaining the requests for changes in the Physician Assistant (PA) Program. SFCC was very impressed. The changes will be posted in June and acted on at the August meeting.
VI. 2-2 conference:
1. CMC requested that the group consider a change in the proposed dates. Their campus has scheduled an all-campus meeting on one of the dates. SFCC looked at other options and tried to accommodate the request, but concluded that the scheduled dates would stay the same (Sep. 18 and 25).
2. Joan handed out a breakdown of disciplines for the two conferences. The group made several comments and suggestions. Joan will send the information out. (On May 14, Joan sent this information to the faculty at each college—thanks.)
3. The group discussed several possible topics for the conference.
VII. Wendy Kilgore from the system office showed the group how to access the CCNS on Banner. There is a link in Banner to CCNS. This is under construction and should be ready in June. She will look into how Aims and CMC can have access. She will also look into several requests for possible searches that would be helpful—like what college is teaching what course. Sherrill will continue to be the one to input the information. SFCC seemed to be impressed with this addition. The whole thing should be more stable.
VIII. The meeting adjourned.
IX. The next SFCC meeting is scheduled for August 21, 2009.
Minutes respectfully submitted by,
Fred Boettcher
SFCC Secretary
