'Ace the Interview'
Do Not Leave Your Completers
HANGING!!
In today’s challenging labor market, it is essential that our students have every opportunity to compete for the jobs for which they have been trained. It is also important to Opportunity School that we are able to show high placement rates. If we fall below a certain level, our Perkins funding and our NCA accreditation could be negatively impacted.
The Student Success Center wants to ensure that all of our career and technical education students are prepared for the world of work. If your students need some tips on interviewing, please allow them to attend this important workshop.
‘Ace the Interview’
Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Location: Glenarm Conference Room
Time: 12 – 1 pm
If you would like interviewing skills and resume writing workshops designed and conducted specifically for your students in your classrooms, please contact the Success Center at x34743. Students can also stop by the Success Center at any time for assistance with resumes and job searches.

Cancellation of Happy Hour
“Well it appears that Mother Nature once again will rain (snow) on our (my) parade! Looking at the forecast for this Friday the 14th, the weather will not cooperate so the Happy Hour has been cancelled. Maybe in the fall once school begins again we can schedule a get together. Thanks. Dorothy”

DPS Benefits Selection and Fairs
DPS Benefits Selection and Fairs
There are six benefits fairs left, please plan to attend one if you receive medical benefits. We have a few employees who went this week and found it very beneficial. You can talk directly to the health insurance providers at the fair, and they will have computers set up so that you can make your benefits selection there.
Due to the changes in benefit options, every employee will need to make a medical plan choice during the open enrollment window, May 1 – 23. While all employees currently enrolled in PacificCare will have to choose a new provider, CIGNA's network overlaps significantly with the PacificCare network. You can learn about all of the coverage options by attending one of the remaining benefits fairs scheduled in May.
· Monday, May 10 from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Abraham Lincoln HS, 2285 S Federal Blvd
· Tuesday, May 11 from 9:30 a.m. – Noon at the Northeast Terminal, 4937 Dallas Street. This is an informational meeting for second-shift workers. Benefit carriers only – no wellness fair. Computers available.
· Monday, May 17 from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Montbello HS, 5000 Crown Blvd
· Tuesday, May 18 from 4:00 – 7:00pm at Bruce Randolph School, 3955 Steele Street
· Wednesday, May 19 from 4:00 – 7:00pm at George Washington HS, 655 S. Monaco Parkway
· Saturday, May 22 from 9:00 a.m. – Noon at East HS, 1600 City Park Esplanade

Top School Update
Top School Update
In case you have forgotten, we will switch from the Banner System to Top School, our new student information system by the beginning of June. Here is just a quick update on where we are with the conversion process.
We are actively using the Prospect Module (it is working really well!)
We have successfully:
Set up all programs
Set up all course sections for the summer term
We are in the process of:
Uploading all historic data from Banner
Fine-tuning the online student application
Finishing training materials for student registration
We have found the system to be very user friendly. If you have any questions about Top School, do not hesitate to contact any of the conversion team members.
Dee Wood, Christine Hill, Tisha Corbett, Slavica Park, Jean Butler, Dianna Marriott, Thuy Hoare, Tandy Reyes, Trudy Hinkle, Kimberly McKay, Gardner Sullivan
"Emily Griffith loved to interact with foreign students. In a speech given in 1927, she commented, "I like to think of the foreigners who come to us. They need a friend as much as they need English." She recalled one Italian girl, a student at Opportunity School, who told her, "I never used to look at your moon. I always thought about the moon in Italy. Last summer for the first time...your moon was my moon, your stars were my stars."
