Students and Staff in the News Again

Michael Kessler, EGOS Floral Design Instructor was featured in the most recent issue of Colorado Expression Architecture and Design Magazine for his creative in-home holiday designs. The layout included photos of both Michaels’ work and that of some of his former students. Emily Griffith was prominently mentioned in the article. Great job promoting the school Michael!!

The EGOS Professional Sewing and Design students are at it again!! One current class student and five graduates of the program were chosen as 6 of Denver’s 12 most talented designers. That means one-half of the city’s top designers are from EGOS! They will participate in “Frock Out Denver: Independent Designers Challenge”, Thursday, December 6 from 8-9 p.m. at the sold out fundraiser for the Central Denver Public Library.

Their designs were on display in the main lobby for several weeks prior to the event and garnered positive attention for EGOS. Kudos to the Professional Sewing and Design Program instructors and students. The Denver Public Library staff is particularly pleased that EGOS, a close neighbor produced such talent. Let’s keep on getting our name out there!

CODE OF ETHICS

Several instructors have requested the “Code of Ethics” scroll so that they can be placed in their classrooms. If you would like to order one of these scrolls, please contact Jan Raymond by December 20th. The Public Relations Department will print up these scrolls for distribution to staff.

Kudos to Andy Ruhland

Kudos to student Andy Ruhland for diffusing a very difficult situation with an unruly cosmetology customer on Friday. After observing the situation, Andrew pretended to be security and quickly escorted the customer down to the administration offices. He should be commended for his quick thinking and deft handling of the situation. Thanks, Andrew.

Holiday Food Drive

The foundation and EGOS will be participating again in the holiday food drive to benefit senior citizens who are alone for the holidays. Senior Answers & Services prepares and distributes approximately 200 baskets to seniors. Each basket contains about $50 worth of food and is topped with a fresh load of bread, a fresh chicken, fresh fruit, and a holiday gift. Sometimes this gift is the only one the senior receives, as many have no family and few friends. Containers to collect your donated items are in the main hall by registration and near the receiving room on the lower level. The following items are suggested: Boxed potatoes, rice, noodles, canned corn, beans, peas, dressing, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, desserts, cake mixes, fruit, pickles, olives, sugar, salt, cereal, crackers, paper products, and toiletries. Cash donations are also accepted for frozen chickens, fresh fruit and bread, and small personal gifts.

FOOD COLLECTION FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Congratulations to the advanced morning refugee ESL class for bringing food to share with the senior citizens! They have already filled one box and are working on the second one. They have been very generous with their giving, and we would like to challenge the other classes to do the same.

On December 17th, we will have students come and pick two books for each of their children.

Eileen Ashford’s Mother

Eileen Ashford’s mother passed away Thursday morning, November 29, after a long illness. Eileen’s mother had lived with her until recently, and they both loved the solitude and tranquility of their garden. We are taking up a collection for a gift certificate to a nursery, recommended by Michael Kessler, so that Eileen can select something to place in her garden as a memorial to her mother (bird bath, bench or statue.) If you wish to participate in this remembrance, please give any donations to Dianna Marriott and she will add your name to the card.

Justice Center Parking Now Open with Update

Justice Center Parking Update
Don’t park at the Convention Center when you bring Maria your green hanging tag; park at the Justice Center. You won’t get a ticket this week at the Justice Center if you don’t have your permit, but you may get a ticket if you park at the Convention Center without a permit. Be sure you get your Justice Center permit this week because we will be checking permits after this week.

------Original Post------
Well, almost. The electronic gates haven’t been installed yet, which means the parking structure is only open 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.

Whoever needs parking later than 6 P.M. should either continue parking at the Convention Center or use RMO (a sticker is needed for RMO parking. Everyone else should start parking at the Justice Center.

For those who will be parking at the Justice Center:

If you have a green hanging tag, bring it to Maria Herrera in the main office and she will give you a new one for the Justice Center. (You must return your green tag to get a new one. Also the Convention Center is asking us to return the green tags.)

If you have been using a paper permit, Maria will give you a new paper permit for the Justice Center.

Everyone who parks at the Justice Center needs to provide Maria with the following information before being issued a permit: car make and license plate number. Maria has the form to fill out.

Opportunity School parking at the Justice Center is on Level 5 and the entrance is on Delaware between 13th Ave. and 14th Ave. Parking hours are 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.

If you have questions, see Brad Vickers, Maria Herrera, Jan Raymond, or Brad Bohland.

Fashion Students and Faculty Recognized

The Art of Fashion: EGOS Students and Faculty Recognized for the Ideas and Creativity

Drawing inspiration from such varied sources as Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, the architecture of the Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum and Jean-Claude Christo’s “Gates” art installation in New York City, designers who studied at Emily Griffith Opportunity School and Faculty joined talents from across the country in earning awards in the annual Fashion Challenge sponsored by Threads magazine.

The show October 13 at the Westin Tabor Center, held as part of the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers 14th Annual National Convention, gave participants a chance to show their originality and skills while competing for prizes. Winners of the Fashion Challenge, which asked participants to create a 21st Century Masterpiece of couture inspired by art, will have their work in a future issue of
Threads magazine.

Adam Van Eeckhout, an EGOS Professional Sewing and Design student, was awarded a full PACC scholarship based on his portfolio submittal and he was able to attend the national conference and the Master Classes. The latter were offered by national experts who used the classroom facilities at EGOS. Adam’s garment, a black, avant garde cocktail dress was modeled on the runway in the General Fashion Show category.

Two current Professional and Sewing and Design instructors were finalists in the Fashion Challenge. Carol Engel-Enright had two garments on the runway, “Water Lillies” inspired by Monet and “Blue Lace,” inspired by Van Gogh. Jan White, the other EGOS instructor, won the National Challenge in the category “Most Imaginative Use of Materials and Design” with her russet orange silk Doupioni vest and gray leggings and shirt.

Former student, Anita McGregor, won the “People’s Choice Award” for her “Architectural Coat.” In the General Fashion Category, Mary Beth Davis, a former instructor, showed both a Red Chinese Coat and Dress and a Multi-layered chiffon cocktail dress and Carol Engel-Enright had a white suit with hand woven accents.

Two other students who have attended EGOS, Darcey Lewis and Joellyn Keranen, who are both working in the field also had garments in the show. Ashley Apodaca, Dixie Guebera and Areceli Lerma, current students, modeled designs. In addition, many other EGOS students, including Jose Clark, last year’s PACC scholarship winner, attended the event. It was exciting to see how many former EGOS students are now PACC members earning their living in fashion and design.

Kudos to Vicky Nolan for encouraging her students and colleagues to participate in this and numerous other fashion industry events. She is making both a local and national name for our school.

Rain in a Dry Land

Sharon McCreary and CRESL In-Home Tutoring Program

invite you to a special screening of the award-winning PBS documentary:

Rain in a Dry Land

Thursday, September 13

EGOS Room 123

6:30 p.m. gather and introduction

6:45 p.m. Movie starts!

The documentary is approximately 90 minutes in length. If time allows, we’ll

discuss the film utilizing additional resources provided by PBS.

For a refugee, the distance between an African village and an American city is measured in much more than miles. It is a journey of enormous cultural, physical, personal and emotional adjustment.
Rain in a Dry Land chronicles two years of that journey for two Somali Bantu families.

Resettlement brings surprises and challenges as the newcomers confront racism, urban poverty, and major 21st-century culture shock. The film captures every step of this process as parents struggle to create a stable, safe haven for their war-torn families, and children struggle to navigate the social and academic challenges of school.

Each person’s unique experience provides an outstanding opportunity for Americans to learn about refugees in the U.S. and to see ourselves and our culture through new eyes. This film is compelling, emotionally moving, and very thought-provoking.

Grant News

The Office of Economic Development / Division of Workforce Development announced last week that The West Career Academy Collaborative has been awarded a grant in the amount of $315,982. This collaborative represents a partnership between Colorado Youth for Change, Emily Griffith Opportunity School, Goodwill Industries, West High School, and United Way. Through this grant, 86 out-of-school youth will be enrolled in an academy program at West High School that features academic instruction, mentoring and leadership development, as well as post-secondary career and technical training in Denver’s high-growth occupations (at Emily Griffith).

Opportunity School will directly benefit from this grant through increased enrollment in multiple programs and funding to support a home health aide lab on-site at WHS. Moreover, the superintendent’s office stated publicly that they view this project as a model for the entire district. From the ESL Department

Ecumenical Refugee & Immigration Services is in desperate need of beds and bedding (sheets, blankets, etc.) in all sizes. The number of refugees coming to Denver is overwhelming right now, and the supply of beds has diminished down to only a few. Ecumenical is looking for good condition mattress and box spring sets with frames. The agency will arrange to pick up the bed at your location. Saturday pickups are available.

This is a tax deductible donation. Donations coordinator Joyce Hansen (303-860-0128 ext. 30) will be happy to mail you a receipt after pickup has been made.

ERIS, one of three resettlement agencies sending refugee students to EGOS, is only just starting their busy season and is expected to receive many more refugee families over the next few months. Please donate beds, bedding, towels, and any other “good condition” household items to this nonprofit refugee agency to help out a newly arrived family in need.

DPS Administration Building for Sale

PRESS RELEASE
FOR Immediate RELEASE Contact: June 26, 2007 Alex SanchezDirector of Communicationsalex_sanchez@dpsk12.org(720) 423-3305
For Sale: DPS Administration Building is on the Market Denver, CO— Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board President Theresa Peña and Superintendent Michael Bennet put the district’s administration building, located on 900 Grant Street, up for sale earlier today. Frederick Ross Company and Apartment Realty Advisors of Colorado are the listing agents. The DPS administration building was built in 1968 and purchased by the district in 1974 for $3.2 million dollars. DPS has used the 9 floors and 102,416 square foot office space as its headquarters since 1974. “This building has served DPS well for many years but we have to do what is best for the district,” said Bennet. “We are confident we can save money and better support our working environment by moving our administrative operations somewhere else within the district.” “The district will benefit from the long-term savings in operating costs” added Peña. “The next step is to decide where to place the administration to better serve the kids of Denver.” The district continues to explore all options regarding where to place the administrative personnel who currently reside at 900 Grant Street. One of the options under consideration is moving the administration to a school with available space in order for administrators to be closer to students. “It’s an incredible opportunity for kids to have professional role models in their building,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Jaime Aquino. “The administration will also benefit from the daily reminder of why we do the work we do.” For more information, please contact the Communications Office at (720) 423-3314.

Thanks to Custodial Department

The Practical Nursing department faculty would like to thank the Custodial services staff for their help in getting new lab equipment assembled for our department. Old hospital beds and tables were donated to Project Cure International and sent to Metapan Hospital in El Salvador in May. In order to get the beds out of the lab a wall needed to be removed. After the old beds were removed the new ones needed to be assembled and set up in the lab. Victor Quintana and his staff (and John Gibbons) were there to help and worked hard for several days to get things done. Special thank you’s to John Clements and Garfield Baca for their team work and perseverance with us through the process (we had no idea how to help). The lab looks great! Please stop by and check out our new furniture.

Corporate Training Corner

The Corporate Training Department would like to give a very big THANK YOU to Chef Kristi Martin .On Wednesday evening EGOS hosted 17 students from the A.L.I.V.E. Program. This is a newly established education program for adults with Down syndrome and taught by two therapists who have extensive experience in working with people with cognitive disabilities. Chef Kristi taught the students to make omelets and engaged them in the process. Students enjoyed sampling the omelets and a tour of the bakery. During this class we learned that Gretchen Josephson, currently an employee at Macy’s, began her early career by taking classes at EGOS, which led to her job at the Denver Dry Goods Tea Room in downtown Denver many years ago. Thank you also goes to Slavica Park and Katrina Wert for welcoming the students to EGOS.
Dee Wood’s father, Denver, also assisted the students from the parking lot to the deli along with Jim, our security officer.
