Thank You for a Great Diversity Day

Thank you to all those who helped make Diversity Day a huge success.

Many thanks to Victor Quintana and the entire Custodial Staff for the excellent job preparing for the event and handling all of the extra cleaning of the day.

Janice Genova along with her crew in Event Management— Ausma, Ann, Tabitha and Traci— did a great job decorating the performance area.

Chef Tim, Kristi and everyone in the 12th Street Deli organized a great menu and did an impressive job feeding so many people.

Special thanks goes to the entire Language Learning Center staff and volunteers for their hard work and the enthusiasm they inspired in their students.

Thanks to Brad Vickers and the Admin team for their support.

Marilyn Bowlds and the Emily Griffith Foundation helped to raise more money this Diversity Day than any other year (over $12,000)

Thanks to the folks in PR, Frank Aguilar for helping out with all of the printing of promotional materials and to Christine Hill for helping out with the Diversity Day website. Myles Lawler, Sharron Carosella and Chris Millius helped with setting up.

Thank you to the IRC for setting up games and a children's reading corner in the library.

Even though the last-minute change in plans due to the threat of bad weather pulled attention away from some of the demonstrations, the efforts and
the eagerness of Welding, HVAC and Automotive to incorporate our program diversity into Diversity Day must be noted. Thanks to Dean Mitchell, Ryan Thomas, Jerry Gates and TJ for organizing the demonstrations from your departments. Hopefully we can take better advantage of what you have to offer next year.

It is the help of everyone involved that allows us to make Diversity Day a highlight of our cultural and programmatic diversity.

Interview Skills and Resume Workshops

Graduation is just around the corner. Since job placement is very important to Opportunity School, we want our graduates to possess all of the skills necessary to compete in the labor market. The Career Development Center, Success Center, and the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) staff members are offering some workshops that will provide our graduates with the skills they need to attain employment. JoAn Keeler assisted in the development of the workshop materials. Please encourage your graduates to attend both workshops.

Ace the Interview Workshops will be offered three more times in the next few weeks:

May 27, 2009 1-2 pm Glenarm Building
June 3, 2009 9-10 pm Glenarrm Building
June 10, 2009 1-2 pm Glenarm Building

Staff Continental Breakfast

There will be a continental breakfast for staff the morning of Diversity Day – Thursday, May 21 from 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m., in room 238

Drawings of the new directional signage for our building will be presented for your comment. Please stop by and review the ideas for our new signs. The renderings are being presented by Arthouse Design which is the company who created the design of Children’s Hospital. Your feedback is important, so please stop by for breakfast and provide your thoughts.

Reminder of Smoking Rules

To All EGOS Staff

Please take a moment today with your students and remind them of the appropriate locations for smoking around Opportunity School. Students may smoke on the Southwest side of the building where the benches are located.
They may also smoke across 13th street on the Northeast Corner of 13th and Welton.

A. Smoking in the building and in any doorways is prohibited.
B. Please NO Smoking in the alley. The welding program stores oxygen and acetylene in the alley way, both are highly flammable.
C. Please inform students not to sit on cars parked along Welton Street, 13h street, or 12th Street when taking break or when smoking.

GRADUATION UPDATE

Graduation will be Tuesday, June 9 in the Korbel Ballroom at the Convention Center. Announcements are available in Room 204 for the high school and at the registration desk for vocational students, five per student. Please encourage your students to participate.
The ceremony is at 10:00 a.m. and the required rehearsal is at 8:00 a.m.
