News from Public Relations
In order to meet the increasing demand of students interested in touring the school, we have created a “campus tour” program for students. The student advisors provide tours every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Tours must be scheduled at least two days in advance by calling or emailing Frank Aguilar in the PR/Marketing Office (frank_aguilar@dpsk12.org or 720-423-4755).
Flyer Template
You may have received the new flyer template in your mailbox (with a funny picture of our staff). We created this flyer to assist you to market your class, program, events or projects. We encourage you to use this template whenever you would normally think to create a flyer. It was designed to help you with your efforts, be easy to use, and also help promote the school brand and logo. Please call or stop by if you have any questions or need help using this new tool. Here’s the link to the Marketing Tool Kit and the flyer template: http://www.egos-school.com/intranet/public/press. There area also other tools in the took kit such as a press release worksheet, photo tips and more.
Opportunity Now Program
Even though our enrollment is up from last year, we want to continue to help more students. Therefore we have created the Opportunity Now Program. This program offers 150,000 households in select zip codes an offer for the first semester credit hour free when they enroll at Emily Griffith Opportunity School. The flyers are set to hit the streets on December 9-10. We are also purchasing increased television ads from now through the February when spring classes start.

Task Forces - Opportunities for Growth
Task Forces – Opportunities for Growth
In order to explore opportunities for growth and improvement for our school, the administrative team participated in a two-day facilitated retreat at the Press Club in May of this year. As a result of the work completed during those sessions, we created three task forces to examine our current operations and set goals and strategies that will enable us to flourish for the future. The team split up into three task forces to focus on the following areas: vision and strategy, operations and administration/instruction. The following is a brief description of the task forces and highlights of the progress made thus far. It is important to note that these tasks forces are focused on growth and improvement – increases in efficiency and opportunity not decreases in services or staff. These task forces are currently meeting to gather information and examine the areas outlined. We encourage you to have conversations with any of the administrative team about the task forces. In the near future there will be opportunities for school-wide participation and feedback. Instructional/Administrative Task ForceTeam Members: Lou Ann Gilhooly, Brad Vickers, Connie Ross, Cobi Chaney, Dorothy Seal Goal: Ensure that the programs we offer are the “best in class” by school year 2010/2011 Objectives: 1) Focus on quality of administration/instruction2) Identify indicators of program/administration success 3) Identify measures of program/administration quality4) Ensure that our programs align with our role and mission Progress to Date:
Created a first draft framework to identify indicators of quality instruction/administration
Carefully considered, career and technical education components, quality administration and instruction, curriculum and assessment, program evaluation, career and community connections, costs and resources Operations Task ForceTeam Members: Slavica Park, Tisha Corbett, Sharron Carosella, Myles Lawler, Connie Burke Goal: Improve the margin of revenue to operational costs by 5 percent each fiscal year beginning in the 2008/2009 continuing through the 2010/2011 school-year. Objectives: 1) Determine optimal enrollment2) Develop profit/loss data3) Improve internal operations Progress to Date:
Completed profit/loss analysis for all programs Strategic Plan/VisionTeam Members: Les Lindauer, Brad Vickers, Dee Wood, Marla Rodriguez Goal: Create a strategy for the future that allows Emily Griffith Opportunity School to be an elite educational institution. Objectives: 1) Determine a “clear direction” for Emily Griffith Opportunity School2) Examine our “place” in higher education3) Develop one-year, two-year, and three-year planProgress to Date: · Examined historic mission and how that still does or does not apply· Examined current vision and mission statements· Examined historic and current practices· Identified key external forces that influence the school

"Emily Griffith loved to interact with foreign students. In a speech given in 1927, she commented, "I like to think of the foreigners who come to us. They need a friend as much as they need English." She recalled one Italian girl, a student at Opportunity School, who told her, "I never used to look at your moon. I always thought about the moon in Italy. Last summer for the first time...your moon was my moon, your stars were my stars."

From the Foundation
We want to thank all of you who have contributed to the Emily Griffith Foundation this year. For those who have not yet had the opportunity, we would greatly appreciate your consideration in any amount as you make your year-end, tax-deductible donations to your favorite charities. We are just a little short of the amount needed to get a challenge grant from the Gates Foundation for a number of renovation projects for the school that include remodeling restrooms, re-keying locks, patching the alley and parking lot, and remodeling a portion of the Success Center.
As you can see from the newsletter in your mailboxes, it’s been a good year for us to date. We look forward to working with all of you.

There will be a raffle for free parking spaces, free food all through the day and displays of student work including a fashion show.
The purpose of this annual celebration is to highlight all of the people of the school.
Since 1916, EGOS has been a place of learning for over 1.5 million students. Without those students throughout the years The Opportunity School would not have had the chance to develop its programs and build on its strong quality. This year’s class will continue that long-standing tradition.

Meet Green
Following months of observation at the Colorado Convention Center (CCC), several meetings with individual transportation companies, as well as attending numerous DMCVB Transportation Forums, we have developed a comprehensive program to educate and encourage drivers to reduce or eliminate idling while servicing Denver.
The main components of the program are as follows:
New signage placed throughout CCC property (with tested messaging) encouraging drivers to turn their engines off and informing them of the 10 minute idling ordinance. See attached examples of these signs. Sign 1 - Sign 2
Count down clocks given to all transportation companies to be placed in shuttles and taxis as a way to measure time spent idling.
Letters sent to CCC vendors informing them of the program and requesting vendors’ pledged compliance. The vendors that sign pledges will be recognized on our website and given a letter of commendation from Mayor Hickenlooper.
Education of our clients to encourage their vendors to reduce idling.
Commitment to follow up regularly with clients and vendors regarding the program.
Thank you for your commitment to our community and our environment. Please let us know if you have further questions regarding the Engine’s OFF! or Meet Green sustainability programs.

Flu Shots - Change of Date for Interest in Clinic
I have found an agency willing to provide a flu shot clinic here at school. I would need to know how many people are interested in having me schedule the clinic. Right now the cost is $ 25.00 for the flu shot; $ 30.00 for the flu mist; and $ 42.00 for the pneumonia shot. We could also have family members included. Thanks. Dorothy Seal, extension 3-4734.

Emily Griffith Documentary
RE: Emily Griffith Documentary
When: Sept. 16-17, 11am-1pm
Where: Rm. 238
There was an overwhelmingly positive response to the Emily Griffith documentary shown at the staff orientation meeting last week, made by Francesca Clifford and Alexandra Guy. Many of you have asked to see the video again since the bright space made the visibility of the DVD poor. The 10 minute video will be set up and played continuously in room 238 next week Tuesday Sept. 16 and Wednesday Sept. 17 from 11am-1:00pmIn addition, DVD’s will be made available to anyone who would like a copy and also the video is making its way to the Opportunity School website.
In addition, we have made copies of this documentary in DVD that you can keep in your classroom and show your students and anyone else who may appreciate seeing it. A donation to the Emily Griffith Foundation would be a gracious gesture, but not necessary.
Please come by 238 and pick of your DVD.

Student Services Update
very busy. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all members
of the Student Services Team for doing an outstanding job. I know how busy
you have been; yet, you still provided the highest level of customer
service.
During the first week of the semester, the Treasurer's Office assisted large
numbers of students to complete the enrollment process, and Jean Noah, on
her own time, picked up books, locks, and keys to assist students....GREAT
JOB! Financial Aid has remained 'caught up' in spite of Kimberly's need to
be out for medical reasons. Registration and Advising have seen many
students and returned countless calls...classes are getting filled. The
Assessment Center served 7,237 students. The Student Success Center issued
2200 student IDs and opened 800 email accounts for students. The
Instructional Resource Center, Career Development Center, Language Learning
Center, and the Emily Griffith High School staff assisted with IDs.
In addition, the Career Development Center planned for a Job Fair and the
Instructional Resource Center published its first edition of a very
professional newsletter. The TANF Office assisted over 50 participants and
held the first Career Circle of the year. Randy Redd in Tech Support has
done an outstanding job updating the computers around the building. Thank
you, all, for your efficiency and dedication.
I also want to thank Chef Tim, Chef Kristi and their students for providing
the lemonade, cups, and napkins for the registration area these past couple
of weeks. The offering of cookies and lemonade provides a very welcoming
atmosphere for potential students. Dianna Marriott picked up the boxes of
cookies, on her own time. Thank you Dianna. Faye Hartz, our excellent
work-study student, also assisted me in replenishing the cookie trays.
Thank you, Faye.

News Release
Eleven Regional Forums Scheduled To Define 21st Century Skills, School Readiness, Postsecondary Readiness, and Workforce Readiness For New State Standards Community members, parents, educators and students are invited to attend one of 11 community meetings being held around the state during the week of Sept. 15 to gather ideas about definitions which will modernize our state’s content standards. The meetings will be hosted by the Colorado Department of Education. The content standards establish by grade and subject what students are expected to learn in school. Each forum will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
Monday, Sept. 15
Denver School of the Arts Concert Hall, 7111 Montview Blvd.
Jefferson County Building, Hearing Room #1, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden
Grand Junction Doubletree Hotel, Monument Room, 743 Horizon Dr.
Tuesday, Sept. 16
Colorado Springs Doubletree Hotel, 1775 E Cheyenne Mountain Blvd.
Durango High School, 2390 Main Ave.
Wednesday, Sept. 17
Alamosa School District, Ortega Middle School, 401 Victoria Ave.
Fort Collins, location to be determined
Philip S. Miller Library, Castle Rock, 100 S. Wilcox
Thursday, September 18
Leadville School District, Lake County High School, 1000 West 4th St.
Pueblo West High School, 661 W. Capistrano Ave.
Steamboat Springs High School, 45 Maple St.
Attendees will be asked to review proposed definitions for “21st century skills,” “school readiness,” “post-secondary readiness” and “workforce readiness.” Those definitions will guide revisions to specific content standards.
“The content standards form the bedrock of our work in schools,” said Colorado Commissioner of Education Dwight D. Jones. “They represent a joint understanding of what is expected of teachers to teach and of students to learn. It’s critical that we gather the state’s best thinking about defining our terms in order to help the standards revision process move forward.”
Commissioner Jones announced the standards review process in September 2007.
The concept of content standards was developed in Colorado in the early 1990’s. Statewide standards for the first time defined the knowledge and benchmarks that students should acquire within each grade span and in each subject. Under state law, local school districts may adopt their own content standards as long as they are at least as rigorous as the state’s version.
The Colorado General Assembly passed the standards-based education law in 1993 and standards were written for reading, writing, mathematics and science. Additional standards have been developed in civics, dance, economics, foreign language, geography, history, music, physical education, theatre and visual arts.
The standards have not changed since schools started using them in 1994. The first strand of what has become the full Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) exam was given in 1997, when fourth-grade students were tested in reading and writing based on those standards.
The department’s Office of Standards and Assessment will deliver proposed new standards to the state board of education for final review December 2009.
For more information about the standards review process, visit http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeassess/documents/OSA/stand_rev.html

PR Department New TV Commercial
A new television commercial was filmed and will air during preseason Broncos games. The commercial from last year will be shown as well. The intent is for the old spot to be a promotional one and the new spot to be a call to action (register for school).Early Registration The early registration program prompted 100 students to sign up for classes during the three-day campaign, and many more signed up during the surrounding days. Students have until July 18th the register in order to be eligible for the drawing for 10 cash prizes. Thank you to the registrars, student success center, instructors and everyone else who worked hard to bring this opportunity to the students. Early registration in the summer was prompted to mitigate the inconvenience for students during the DNC. DNCEmily Griffith Opportunity School will be open for business during the DNC (August 25-29). After considering many different options, it was decided that being open offers the least inconvenience to our students. Please see your supervisor if you have questions about your work requirements during that week. Program FlyersThe PR staff is currently updating the program flyers with updated pricing. The flyers should be ready for distribution by the end of July. Opportunity is Building Please send out a letter or email
I wanted to keep you informed about our ongoing efforts to build a new facility for Opportunity School. I believe we have made great progress towards our goal due to all of your support with our letter writing campaign.Because we are committed to making the best possible move for our school, and after careful discussions with DPS, the citizens’ committee and other community developers, we decided it was best to take time to evaluate all of our opportunities for the new Opportunity School. In addition, we face a difficult economic and political climate. Therefore, we have taken our name out of consideration for this bond in November. DPS has agreed to fund a feasibility study that will examine our needs, then design and plan a facility. DPS will help us secure the location for the new Opportunity School and go for another bond to fund our building in 2-3 years. With this development, we can be sure we have explored all options and secured the best possible option to continue the legacy of Emily Griffith Opportunity School. I know we would not have been able to negotiate these items without being able to show the thousands of letters of support to the superintendent and his staff. I now believe we have the full support of DPS as we move forward with our facility. We have been proactive during this process and I promise to continue to aggressively pursue an upgraded facility. Please feel free to email me or stop by if I can answer any questions for you. We continue to need your support and the support of all our community. Please consider sending the attached letter or the below sample email to all the people who wrote letters. Sample email or correspondence:I wrote you in May to ask for your support for Emily Griffith Opportunity School’s new building. Thank you for your support. We got thousands of letters from alumni, business partners, students, staff and community members. I wanted to let you know that we are making progress towards securing an upgraded facility for Opportunity School.Denver Public Schools has agreed to fund a feasibility study that will examine our needs, as well as design and plan a facility. DPS will help us secure the location for the facility. In 2-3 years DPS will go for another bond initiative to fund it. Therefore, we will not be a line item on this bond initiative. We feel this is a great step towards making our facility a reality. We now have the full support of DPS and are able to move forward with the careful planning of our project in cooperation with the district. Since we made our last proposal to build on the land adjacent to West High School, many other options have surfaced that are worthy of consideration. This gives us the information and the partnerships to explore all our options.
We will continue to need your support as well move through this process. I will keep you informed about our progress and our foundation is already at work raising money for the project. Thank you again for your help. -- Marla RodriguezManager of Public Relations and MarketingEmily Griffith Opportunity School1250 Welton St., Denver, CO 80204Marla_Rodriguez@dpsk12.org720-423-4755egos-school.comFor All Who Wish To Learn

Early Registration
To help students register for fall classes before the week of the Democratic National Convention, we have created an Early Registration Campaign.Students who register for fall classes by July 18th and paid by September 15th are eligible to win one of 10 cash prizes (5 $300 cash prizes; 5 $100 cash prizes).Instructors who participate in the Early Registration Campaign will be entered into a drawing to win two tickets to the Broncos preseason game vs. Dallas and a $50 gift certificate to Maggiano’s. We will be coming around with a sign up sheet for instructors to sign up for a time on July 8,9 or 10 to send their classes down to register for fall classes. We will also bring a poster about the program for each classroom. Please participate in this program. Here’s how you can help:
Encourage students to register early;
Inform students of their eligibility to win one of 10 cash prizes;
Send your class for an Early Registration Time for July 8th, 9th, or 10th;
Display the poster in your class.
On July 8th, 9th and 10th, students who register will be treated to refreshments in the registration area and receive free food and gifts at the Student Success Center by showing their registration receipt. Students are encouraged to register during the specific assigned class time, but as long as they register before July 18th, they will meet the first criteria to be eligible to win (the other criteria is to be paid by September 15th as defined as paid in full, voucher or letter of intent from third party or payment plan).
Please call or email the PR/Marketing Office if you have any questions: 720-423-4766 or 4755
Move During DNC
As most of you know, we have been informed that we will not be able to access our building during the week of the Democratic National Convention, Aug 25-29. Therefore we are researching options to be open at an alternate location because this is the week before classes begin and one of our peak registration periods. It is our intention to be open to register students during the week of the convention and further details will be available as soon as possible.
Rocky Mountain News Error
In the Friday (June 20) edition of the Rocky Mountain News, it was erroneously reported that Emily Griffith Opportunity School would move into a renovated West High School building. This is an error – Emily Griffith Opportunity School intends to build a new building on the land adjacent to West HS. This is error was brought to the reporter’s attention and a correction was published on Saturday, June 21 (see below excerpt from the Sat. paper) and in the online version of the paper. Please assist us in dispelling this and other incorrect information. Please contact the PR office if you have any questions or concerns 720-423-4755 or marla_rodriguez@dpsk12.org.
CORRECTION
• A story on NEWS 26 Friday should have reported that Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter did not vote on the Iraq war funding bill. He was absent for the vote “due to external circumstances,” according to his office. From Perlmutter’s statement: “I would have voted ‘No’ on this amendment which provides $165.4 billion in funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because this amendment contained no benchmarks or timelines for redeploying our troops out of Iraq responsibly, safe and soon.”
. A story on NEWS 5 Friday should have said a citizens’ committee studying a bond issue in Denver Public Schools is considering a proposal to sell Emily Griffith Opportunity School and build a new school on property adjacent to West High School.
• A story on NEWS 16 Friday about a program to pay commuters to avoid driving cars alone on U.S. 36 should have included the Web page to sign up for the program: 36commutingsolutions.org.
• The Book of Wizards review on SPOTLIGHT 30 Friday was written by Mark Graham.
• To notify the Rocky of inaccuracies, call Managing Editor Deb Goeken at 303-954-5443.

Denver Health had a graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 12th, for their employees who completed our on-site Certified Nursing Assistant Program through the Corporate Training Division of our school. They graduated 13 students and approximately 20 administrators from the hospital were in attendance. They were so pleased by the instructor, Terri Mc Daniel, that they have scheduled another class beginning September 2nd and running through the end of November. A big “thank you” goes to both Terri and Janet Holdsworth who assisted Terri with clinicals. The instructors are the ones that make these classes run so well.

WASHINGTON D.C., June 4, 2008 -- Emily Griffith Opportunity School has been selected for the 2008 Best of Denver Award in the Beauty Schools category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA).The USLBA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USLBA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category.
The 2008 USLBA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.Emily Griffith Opportunity School operates its cosmetology school at 1250 Welton St., in the heart of downtown Denver. With day and night programs year round, the school graduates approximately 100 students annually and boasts a 100 percent pass rate for the state board certification exam. Some of Denver’s best stylist are graduates of Opportunity School, including Matthew Morris and Stanley Thomas of the Matthew Morris Salon. About U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA)U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA) is a Washington D.C. based organization funded by local businesses operating in towns, large and small, across America.

Our organization works exclusively with local business owners, trade groups, professional associations, chambers of commerce and other business advertising and marketing groups. Our mission is to be an advocate for small and medium size businesses and business entrepreneurs across America.SOURCE: U.S. Local Business Association Building Opportunity Update - Citizens’ CommitteeLes Lindauer presented to the DPS Citizen’s Committee last week (June 3) about the proposed new building for Opportunity School.
The presentation focused on the benefits to all students, much as Emily Griffith did in 1916. Other presentations to the citizens’ committee for other proposed projects were far less student oriented. The feedback to our presentation, though limited, was favorable. According to the committee schedule, no decisions about which projects to include on the bond initiative will be made until mid-July. Our next course of action will be planned in the next week or two and we will keep you informed. Please continue to provide your feedback and input at the brown bag luncheons and through the “Ask Emily” feature on the staff update.

Technology in Education Conference (TIE)
Update: People who are interested in attending the T.I.E. Conference in June need to get their paperwork in as soon as possible as there is limited lodging left. Please get you supervisor’s approval and get the paperwork to Jan Raymond in room 214, Chris Marshall or Sharron Carosella.
It is time to register for the Technology in Education (TIE) Conference, June 24-27. I had the opportunity to attend last year with Randy Redd, JoAn Keeler, Jan Raymond, Shirleen Woods, Christi Martin, and others. This conference is one of the best I have ever attended. Your level of technology experience does not matter. There are workshops for both the novice and the expert. You may want to ask one of the people who attended last year about the value of this conference. We have Perkins dollars available to fund this professional development activity. We are able to pay for lodging, per diem, mileage, and registration. As the lodging is rather expensive, we encourage people to share, if possible.
See Jan Raymond, as soon as possible to fill out a leave form. As with any other professional development, you need to get approval from your dean or director prior to submitting the leave request for Perkins funding.
