Fire Drill
With a couple of exceptions, the fire drill went rather smoothly yesterday and most appreciated the opportunity to be outside on such a beautiful day. (I planned it that way.)
Except for a couple of stragglers, our exit time was 3 minutes and 23 seconds. Unfortunately, we are obligated to record the time that everyone is evacuated from the building, which added another minute to our time. As you know our goal is 3 minutes, which we have been unable to achieve.
There are a couple of reminders about the procedures which should reduce our exit time.
Everyone should exit immediately once the fire alarm sounds. Every alarm should be treated as if it were the real thing.
Students and staff should exit at the closest stairwell. If the exit diagrams in the classrooms indicate otherwise, please advise Brad Vickers.
The first non-teaching staff to arrive at the exit doors should hold the doors open, facilitating a quicker exit for all.
In addition, after exiting the building, staff members should assist in moving everyone at least 150 feet away from the building until the we receive the “All Clear” signal.
We made a few improvements in the staging areas and the process seems to be working well. Thank you all for your cooperation and for making our building a safer place to work.

'Ace the Interview'
HANGING!!
In today’s challenging labor market, it is essential that our students have every opportunity to compete for the jobs for which they have been trained. It is also important to Opportunity School that we are able to show high placement rates. If we fall below a certain level, our Perkins funding and our NCA accreditation could be negatively impacted.
The Student Success Center wants to ensure that all of our career and technical education students are prepared for the world of work. If your students need some tips on interviewing, please allow them to attend this important workshop.

PURCHASING CUTOFF
In order to comply with the school district’s deadlines, we have set our deadline for all purchase requisitions and petty cash/VISA payment requests for May 17, 2009. Please submit any purchase requests by this deadline. We will not be able to use the district’s purchasing system again until the second week of July, so please plan accordingly. If you have any questions, please contact Audrey_douthit@dpsk12.org.
DPS Benefits Selection and Fairs
There are six benefits fairs left, please plan to attend one if you receive medical benefits. We have a few employees who went this week and found it very beneficial. You can talk directly to the health insurance providers at the fair, and they will have computers set up so that you can make your benefits selection there.
Due to the changes in benefit options, every employee will need to make a medical plan choice during the open enrollment window, May 1 – 23. While all employees currently enrolled in PacificCare will have to choose a new provider, CIGNA's network overlaps significantly with the PacificCare network. You can learn about all of the coverage options by attending one of the remaining benefits fairs scheduled in May.

Top School Update
In case you have forgotten, we will switch from the Banner System to Top School, our new student information system by the beginning of June. Here is just a quick update on where we are with the conversion process.
We are actively using the Prospect Module (it is working really well!)
We have successfully:
Set up all programs
Set up all course sections for the summer term
We are in the process of:
Uploading all historic data from Banner
Fine-tuning the online student application
Finishing training materials for student registration
We have found the system to be very user friendly. If you have any questions about Top School, do not hesitate to contact any of the conversion team members.

"Emily Griffith loved to interact with foreign students. In a speech given in 1927, she commented, "I like to think of the foreigners who come to us. They need a friend as much as they need English." She recalled one Italian girl, a student at Opportunity School, who told her, "I never used to look at your moon. I always thought about the moon in Italy. Last summer for the first time...your moon was my moon, your stars were my stars."

Budget Meetings Update
As you know, the administrative budget committee has been meeting regularly since January to address the budget deficit facing Emily Griffith Opportunity School and higher education.
The committee has examined all areas of the school and has evaluated every suggestion from staff. Many excellent ideas came from the staff meetings and the suggestion box. While some of the ideas are in the process of being implemented or undergoing further research, others are not feasible at this time. We are currently seeking staff input on the remaining suggestions to identify the 5 best suggestions, as some will require a commitment from the staff. However, please know that all suggestions were considered and will be saved for future consideration.
The goal of the budget committee was to have most decisions involving personnel completed on, or before, April 30, 2010. We are preparing to share the information with the staff and specific individuals next week.
At this time, I will share with you two of the decisions that have been finalized. First, we have reluctantly decided to raise tuition 9%, effective for summer 2010 classes. Tuition will increase from $56 to $61 per credit hour for most programs; high-cost programs will increase from $76 to $83 per credit hour. In addition, some programs will have increased student fees.
Second, the school will be closed for staff and students during three weeks of the school year—Aug. 16–20, Dec. 23–31(winter break), and March 28–April 1 (spring break). This schedule will not impact the high school staff who return on August 10 for registration.
The budget decisions made to date are intermediate solutions for a problem that is predicted to continue for several years. The outlook is not promising and additional budget cuts will likely be necessary. Our challenge now is to continue to provide the education and services that we have provided for over 94 years.
Sincerely,

Results of the State Board of Nursing Audit
The auditor stated many times how wonderful both programs are and the commitment of the staff to the students in the programs. She was especially complimentary of the information that is provided to the students regarding the cost of the program. The fact sheet Jean Butler has developed helps the student to know exactly the costs of the entire process when obtaining the nurse aide licensure.
When you see Judy Curtis, Darlene Fraser, Mary Payne, Meg Noll, Eve Bohan, Belva Zeck, Janet Holdsworth, and Terrie McDaniel could you congratulate them? Thanks to all of you because as the saying goes…it takes a village!

In March we added meta tags or search words to each page to help search engines find our individual program pages. As of April 20, we have renamed our individual program pages address (URL) to be something easier for search engines to search. For example: http://www.egos-school.com/health/program?t=3100021 will change to http://www.egos-school.com/Dental-Aide-/health/program?t=3100021. Many people do not know the reason we had the bake sale. Because of budget cuts, we no longer have funding for the end of the year staff award ceremony. The cost last year was just a little over $1500.00 and with four awards given: High School, ESL, Teacher, and Support Staff. Each group needs to come up with $400.00. We would like to extend an invitation to the other groups to match what we did, and we would love to support them as they supported us.

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Conference
TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION COLORADO, INC. (TIE) is a Colorado-based organization founded in 1986 by a group of teachers with a vision to host a conference focusing on the increasing role technology plays in education. Its major objective is to organize a four-day, hands-on technology focused conference each summer that models and promotes the use of technology integration in the classroom.
Last year’s conference featured 100+ different workshops, featured speaker sessions and roundtables with more than 170 different presenters and co-presenters, mostly classroom teachers. This year TIE is cooperating with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) to offer a much bigger conference.
Now in its 31st year, ISTE's Annual Conference & Exposition features an amazing array of professional learning and collaborative networking opportunities. As part of your conference registration, you can choose from more than 600 sessions—formal sessions and hands-on labs, traditional and student poster presentations, Birds-of-a-Feather discussions, and themed lounges and playgrounds. And three inspirational keynotes!
The 2010 ISTE Conference will be held June 27-30 right across the street at the Colorado Convention Center. For us, this is a great opportunity. In addition, the TIE organization has arranged for Colorado attendees to register for the entire conference for only $210…PLUS, we will each get a one-year ISTE membership ($89 value) FREE!!
If you are interested in attending, please let your supervisor know by April 9, 2010. In order to take advantage of this reduced rate, we must register by April 14. If you are eligible to go through the Vocational Teachers’ Council, please get your request submitted to the Council by April 9, as well. Individuals who will be funded through Perkins need to submit leave forms to Jan Raymond by April 9. Jan will register all of us as a group.
Don’t miss out on this OPPORTUNITY!!

ISTE Conference
Join thousands of educators from around the world at the premier technology conference and exposition to be held right across the street at the Colorado Convention Center, June 27-30, 2010.
The International Society for Technical Education (ITSE) Conference will include something for everyone:
Nearly 1000 sessions and events
Networking opportunities
A huge exhibit hall
Interactive playgrounds and topic focused lounges
We encourage Opportunity School faculty and staff to attend…so plan now! The exceptional registration fee of $210 will allow you to attend all four days, or just to attend the sessions of interest to you that are offered when you are available.
If you are interested in attending, please let your supervisor know by April 9, 2010 so that we can allocate the funding. Individuals who are eligible to go through the Vocational Teachers’ Council should pursue that avenue of funding. Other individuals will be funded through Perkins. Your registration will be paid in advance so you will not incur any costs, personally.
This is a GREAT Opportunity to develop new technology skills to use in your classrooms or in your work assignments. Moreover, it was the recommendation of the NCA that we continue to expand and enhance the use of technology at Opportunity School.

Update on Process to Select new Executive Director
Next week, the Principal Selection Advisory Committee will participate in training and prepare for interviews. Tentatively, the interviews will occur after spring break. The committee will select two finalists, however, the DPS superintendent and chief academic officer will make the final selection. The goal is to seek approval of the selected candidate from the school board at the April 22 meeting.
Please consider these as tentative timelines. As you know, the hiring process could take a shorter or longer time depending on how the committee works. While we will try to keep you informed, we are not at liberty to share information about candidates, interviews or committee discussions.

Noise in Hall
Please remind all students to maintain a positive learning environment in classrooms and public areas. Noise and commotion in the halls can be distracting to students who are in class. Instructors, please remind students in the halls near your rooms. Security and administrators will also be monitoring this to assist you. Please continue to do your best to enforce this an all other policies in the Student Code of Conduct. Contact the dean of the department or another administrator if you would like assistance.

Printed Schedule
It has been decided that we are no longer able to send school catalogs or schedules by mail (in any form). The decision was made in order to move towards a greener institution and to save money in both printing and mailing costs. We will provide business cards with the main phone number and web site address to give to students who request the schedule. In addition, students who call can be referred to the web site to view the schedule. The catalogs will continue to be distributed in racks throughout the city and in many public buildings and libraries.

Title: SHHRP Job Fair
Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that employment was little changed in February. Job losses continued in construction and information, while employment continued to increase, but only in temporary help services. UGH! Since December 2007, employment has fallen by 8.4 million. Regional and State stats for January are to be issued on March 10th; we may find that even in Denver, things are not great.
Want to do something about those “out-of-work” blues? Help job seekers; minorities and women are especially hard-hit. Tell your audience about the Society of Hispanic Human Resource Professionals (SHHRP) Job Fair on St. Patrick’s day. We’ll have over 30 employers, and lots of Community Partners. Job seekers need to make this stop. It’s free, and they might just walk in, do some networking, and leave with a job!
We’re counting on you to make sure EVERYONE knows about this exciting event!

From the Foundation:
A great big thank you to everyone who attended the Financial Information Seminar on February 25! We had a record crowd, and over $1000 was raised for student scholarships. As promised, the foundation is hosting a breakfast for the staffs of the department that had the most students in attendance. It was a five-way tie! The winners were HVAC, Sewing, Business, ESL, and Culinary. So—if you are a staff member in one of those programs, please be our guest for breakfast in the Deli on Thursday, March 11, at 7:15 a.m. Please let us know by Tuesday, March 9, if you can come, and we certainly hope you can.
