Here is an update on efforts to reduce idling at and surrounding the Convention Center. In response to Emily Griffith’s concerns over air quality and in accordance with the objectives of our sustainability program, Meet Green, we have collaborated with the City and County of Denver Environmental Health department to create the Engine’s OFF! idling program.
Following months of observation at the Colorado Convention Center (CCC), several meetings with individual transportation companies, as well as attending numerous DMCVB Transportation Forums, we have developed a comprehensive program to educate and encourage drivers to reduce or eliminate idling while servicing Denver.
The main components of the program are as follows:
New signage placed throughout CCC property (with tested messaging) encouraging drivers to turn their engines off and informing them of the 10 minute idling ordinance. See attached examples of these signs. Sign 1 - Sign 2
Count down clocks given to all transportation companies to be placed in shuttles and taxis as a way to measure time spent idling.
Letters sent to CCC vendors informing them of the program and requesting vendors’ pledged compliance. The vendors that sign pledges will be recognized on our website and given a letter of commendation from Mayor Hickenlooper.
Education of our clients to encourage their vendors to reduce idling.
Commitment to follow up regularly with clients and vendors regarding the program.
Thank you for your commitment to our community and our environment. Please let us know if you have further questions regarding the Engine’s OFF! or Meet Green sustainability programs.

Flu Shots - Change of Date for Interest in Clinic
Please contact Dorothy Seal, 3-4734, by Wednesday October 1, 2008 if you are interested in a flu shot clinic. Also students will be welcomed to participate in the clinic.
I have found an agency willing to provide a flu shot clinic here at school. I would need to know how many people are interested in having me schedule the clinic. Right now the cost is $ 25.00 for the flu shot; $ 30.00 for the flu mist; and $ 42.00 for the pneumonia shot. We could also have family members included. Thanks. Dorothy Seal, extension 3-4734.

Student Services Update
We completed the first week of this semester and student services is still
very busy. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all members
of the Student Services Team for doing an outstanding job. I know how busy
you have been; yet, you still provided the highest level of customer
service.
During the first week of the semester, the Treasurer's Office assisted large
numbers of students to complete the enrollment process, and Jean Noah, on
her own time, picked up books, locks, and keys to assist students....GREAT
JOB! Financial Aid has remained 'caught up' in spite of Kimberly's need to
be out for medical reasons. Registration and Advising have seen many
students and returned countless calls...classes are getting filled. The
Assessment Center served 7,237 students. The Student Success Center issued
2200 student IDs and opened 800 email accounts for students. The
Instructional Resource Center, Career Development Center, Language Learning
Center, and the Emily Griffith High School staff assisted with IDs.
In addition, the Career Development Center planned for a Job Fair and the
Instructional Resource Center published its first edition of a very
professional newsletter. The TANF Office assisted over 50 participants and
held the first Career Circle of the year. Randy Redd in Tech Support has
done an outstanding job updating the computers around the building. Thank
you, all, for your efficiency and dedication.
I also want to thank Chef Tim, Chef Kristi and their students for providing
the lemonade, cups, and napkins for the registration area these past couple
of weeks. The offering of cookies and lemonade provides a very welcoming
atmosphere for potential students. Dianna Marriott picked up the boxes of
cookies, on her own time. Thank you Dianna. Faye Hartz, our excellent
work-study student, also assisted me in replenishing the cookie trays.
Thank you, Faye.

Passing of a Long-Time ESL Staff Member
On Sunday, September 7, long-time ESL staff member, Dick Thompson, passed away. Dick had been a part of the EGOS family for almost 20 years. He was a dedicated member of the ESL department who always found the time to make current and prospective students feel welcomed at our school. Over the years, students often made a point of stopping by the ESL office to visit with Dick or to take the time to express their thanks for his good-natured manner, as well as for the patience, assistance, and guidance he shared so readily. He always had a friendly word not only for each member of the ESL staff, but for the many other EGOS staff members he befriended. Evenings in the ESL office won’t be quite the same without Dick’s friendly presence.
Funeral arrangements are still being finalized. Those who wish to express their condolences to the family should contact Dick’s wife, Gabriela, and his daughter, Marisa Thompson.

News Release
Eleven Regional Forums Scheduled To Define 21st Century Skills, School Readiness, Postsecondary Readiness, and Workforce Readiness For New State Standards Community members, parents, educators and students are invited to attend one of 11 community meetings being held around the state during the week of Sept. 15 to gather ideas about definitions which will modernize our state’s content standards. The meetings will be hosted by the Colorado Department of Education. The content standards establish by grade and subject what students are expected to learn in school. Each forum will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
Monday, Sept. 15
Denver School of the Arts Concert Hall, 7111 Montview Blvd.
Jefferson County Building, Hearing Room #1, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden
Grand Junction Doubletree Hotel, Monument Room, 743 Horizon Dr.
Tuesday, Sept. 16
Colorado Springs Doubletree Hotel, 1775 E Cheyenne Mountain Blvd.
Durango High School, 2390 Main Ave.
Wednesday, Sept. 17
Alamosa School District, Ortega Middle School, 401 Victoria Ave.
Fort Collins, location to be determined
Philip S. Miller Library, Castle Rock, 100 S. Wilcox
Thursday, September 18
Leadville School District, Lake County High School, 1000 West 4th St.
Pueblo West High School, 661 W. Capistrano Ave.
Steamboat Springs High School, 45 Maple St.
Attendees will be asked to review proposed definitions for “21st century skills,” “school readiness,” “post-secondary readiness” and “workforce readiness.” Those definitions will guide revisions to specific content standards.
“The content standards form the bedrock of our work in schools,” said Colorado Commissioner of Education Dwight D. Jones. “They represent a joint understanding of what is expected of teachers to teach and of students to learn. It’s critical that we gather the state’s best thinking about defining our terms in order to help the standards revision process move forward.”
Commissioner Jones announced the standards review process in September 2007.
The concept of content standards was developed in Colorado in the early 1990’s. Statewide standards for the first time defined the knowledge and benchmarks that students should acquire within each grade span and in each subject. Under state law, local school districts may adopt their own content standards as long as they are at least as rigorous as the state’s version.
The Colorado General Assembly passed the standards-based education law in 1993 and standards were written for reading, writing, mathematics and science. Additional standards have been developed in civics, dance, economics, foreign language, geography, history, music, physical education, theatre and visual arts.
The standards have not changed since schools started using them in 1994. The first strand of what has become the full Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) exam was given in 1997, when fourth-grade students were tested in reading and writing based on those standards.
The department’s Office of Standards and Assessment will deliver proposed new standards to the state board of education for final review December 2009.
