From the ESL Department

Ecumenical Refugee & Immigration Services is in desperate need of beds and bedding (sheets, blankets, etc.) in all sizes. The number of refugees coming to Denver is overwhelming right now, and the supply of beds has diminished down to only a few. Ecumenical is looking for good condition mattress and box spring sets with frames. The agency will arrange to pick up the bed at your location. Saturday pickups are available.

This is a tax deductible donation. Donations coordinator Joyce Hansen (303-860-0128 ext. 30) will be happy to mail you a receipt after pickup has been made.

ERIS, one of three resettlement agencies sending refugee students to EGOS, is only just starting their busy season and is expected to receive many more refugee families over the next few months. Please donate beds, bedding, towels, and any other “good condition” household items to this nonprofit refugee agency to help out a newly arrived family in need.

Rumors – Rumors - Rumors

It has been brought to my attention that there is a rumor going around that Emily Griffith Opportunity School will close in 2008.

I can assure you that Emily Griffith Opportunity School will be here in 2008. I will keep staff informed if anything is happening. In the meantime, please help stop the rumors from flying. They are just that, rumors, with nothing to substantiate them.

DPS Administration Building for Sale

PRESS RELEASE
FOR Immediate RELEASE Contact: June 26, 2007 Alex SanchezDirector of Communicationsalex_sanchez@dpsk12.org(720) 423-3305
For Sale: DPS Administration Building is on the Market Denver, CO— Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board President Theresa Peña and Superintendent Michael Bennet put the district’s administration building, located on 900 Grant Street, up for sale earlier today. Frederick Ross Company and Apartment Realty Advisors of Colorado are the listing agents. The DPS administration building was built in 1968 and purchased by the district in 1974 for $3.2 million dollars. DPS has used the 9 floors and 102,416 square foot office space as its headquarters since 1974. “This building has served DPS well for many years but we have to do what is best for the district,” said Bennet. “We are confident we can save money and better support our working environment by moving our administrative operations somewhere else within the district.” “The district will benefit from the long-term savings in operating costs” added Peña. “The next step is to decide where to place the administration to better serve the kids of Denver.” The district continues to explore all options regarding where to place the administrative personnel who currently reside at 900 Grant Street. One of the options under consideration is moving the administration to a school with available space in order for administrators to be closer to students. “It’s an incredible opportunity for kids to have professional role models in their building,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Jaime Aquino. “The administration will also benefit from the daily reminder of why we do the work we do.” For more information, please contact the Communications Office at (720) 423-3314.

Thanks to Custodial Department

The Practical Nursing department faculty would like to thank the Custodial services staff for their help in getting new lab equipment assembled for our department. Old hospital beds and tables were donated to Project Cure International and sent to Metapan Hospital in El Salvador in May. In order to get the beds out of the lab a wall needed to be removed. After the old beds were removed the new ones needed to be assembled and set up in the lab. Victor Quintana and his staff (and John Gibbons) were there to help and worked hard for several days to get things done. Special thank you’s to John Clements and Garfield Baca for their team work and perseverance with us through the process (we had no idea how to help). The lab looks great! Please stop by and check out our new furniture.
